If you talk to me about signing up for a race when I am at the bar with friends, I am guaranteed to sign up right then and there. I always do. It is slightly dangerous how easily I can be talked into races.
Back in March that is exactly what happened. A few friends were talking about this 13.Wine Half Marathon and I was signed up before I knew it.
It was a runner girls dream race- wine, girls weekend with a side of running!
I originally planned on just running the half marathon. No time goal. No pressure. Just fun. In the last month or so that all changed. I have gained speed without focusing on it and I wanted to see just how hard I could run 13.1 miles.
The race started off great! I had really heavy legs due to not resting enough, but I knew I could push through. Little did I know due to my own stupidity for not ever looking at a race map, that the route was COMPLETE HILLS! One hill right after another. I was not PREPARED!
I held onto a 9:20ish pace the first 8 miles. But was staring to lose my strength. I started to drop back from my running partners and walked up most of the hills. By mile 10 I had the chills and was starting to get nervous if I would even finish. I just kept envisioning fried chicken and wine- it is amazing what I’ll run for. Plus there was a random guy that was always cheering really loud at the top of EVERY hill. Cheering spectators will also give you the push you need to keep going.
I had never gotten the chills running on an 80 degree day before. I had already drank all 16 oz of Nuun that I had and started drinking as much water at each aid station that my stomach could handle.
My pace continued to decrease, but I was moving forward! I was ready to just lay in the grass.
2:07:39- I finished on empty
The race was full of positive splits, but I did PR by 2 minutes and gosh dang it, I think I earned every second of that 2 minutes.
Wine at the end of the race wasn’t a bad thing either.
